Inventory Planning

Part of Seasonal and gift subscriptions

Planning seasonal product changes for subscribers

Set a seasonal contents calendar, protect the original box promise and tell subscribers which delivery a product change affects.

Plan every seasonal change against the subscription promise customers already accepted. A new theme may alter the selection, but it must not quietly remove a guaranteed item, reduce a stated quantity or breach a firm recipient requirement.

Set the boundary for variation

Write down what stays the same and what may change. The stable part might be a product category, usable quantity, guaranteed item or suitability rule. The changing part might be a theme or a choice among eligible variants. Explain that boundary on the product page before sign-up.

An Australian summer selection may differ from a winter one, but the season name alone does not describe the contents. If photographs show earlier boxes, identify them as examples where future contents will vary. The ACCC can require businesses to back up claims they make about their products or services, and can investigate misleading conduct. It also educates businesses and consumers about rights and obligations under the consumer guarantees, and can investigate if a business misleads consumers about their consumer guarantee rights.

Set a decision calendar for each box

For every seasonal cycle, name the first order that will receive the new selection. Work back to dates for product approval, supplier confirmation, subscriber notice, customer changes, final allocation and packing. If a charge occurs before exact contents are final, the advertised selection rule must still describe what that payment buys.

Record the required products and acceptable variants for that cycle. Check whether stock expected from suppliers can arrive before the packing cut-off; an expected delivery is not stock on hand. If a scarce item is essential to the promised box, resolve its availability before taking further orders for that selection.

Approve the change against existing orders

Before releasing the selection, check:

  1. Does it meet every guaranteed item, category and quantity?
  2. Are variants within the advertised range?
  3. Does a firm requirement rule out any proposed item?
  4. Does the change affect the stated dispatch window?
  5. Which customers need to know before their charge or change cutoff?

A similar stated retail value does not establish that a substitute serves the same purpose. If the proposed box materially departs from the offer, identify affected orders and decide the response under their terms and applicable consumer rights. Tell those subscribers which parcel changes and what choices are available. Do not describe a substituted item as the original product.

Pre-Release Change Validation Checklist

  • Meets guaranteed item, category and quantity?Yes/No
  • Variants within advertised range?Yes/No
  • Firm requirement rules out any proposed item?Yes/No
  • Dispatch window affected?Yes/No
  • Which customers need notification before charge or change cutoff?List of subscriber groups

Carry the decision forward

Keep the approved contents rule and the variants actually packed for each cycle. After delivery, ask what subscribers used or left aside. Treat those answers as feedback about the selection, not proof of demand or retention. Use a concrete problem to revise the next cycle, and update the offer description before selling it to new subscribers.
