Explaining renewal behaviour to gift purchasers
Explain whether a gift subscription renews, who pays the next charge, when it happens and how the purchaser can stop it.
Tell the gift purchaser whether the purchase ends after its included deliveries or automatically starts another paid term. If it renews, show who will be charged, when the charge occurs, the amount or the clearly stated pricing rule that sets it, and how to stop that charge. Put those facts beside the gift choice before payment.
State the actual behaviour
A fixed gift should state that no further payment is scheduled under that purchase. A renewing gift should state that the purchaser's payment method will be charged again under the agreed terms, unless the purchaser acts by the stated deadline. Name the included term and the last delivery it covers.
“Gift”, “prepaid” and “seasonal” do not describe a renewal setting. A prepaid gift may end, or its terms may provide for another paid term. Use the behaviour of the offer being sold, including who owns the payment method, rather than the plan label.
Put price and timing where the decision is made
Show the total amount due for the initial commitment and explain any applicable delivery charge.
State a known renewal price and charge date, or the rule that determines them. If a price can change, explain the applicable terms and how the purchaser will learn the amount before it is charged. An introductory gift price should not imply that the next term costs the same.
The cancellation route and deadline need to be understandable before purchase. Check that the stated route stops the intended future charge under the actual order and billing process. Do not promise that cancelling a renewal also cancels parcels already paid for, unless that is the effect of the terms and process.
Keep the recipient’s role clear
The recipient may receive delivery updates or choose an offered variant without agreeing to pay. Treat the purchaser as payment owner, unless the recipient separately chooses and authorises a paid plan. An invitation for the recipient to continue should show a new price and terms before they decide.
Repeat the included deliveries and renewal status in the purchaser’s confirmation. If the business sends a renewal reminder, use the current subscription record to name the coming charge and the available cancellation route. Its timing should give the purchaser a real opportunity to use that route.
Before selling the offer, compare the wording with checkout, confirmation, the final included parcel, cancellation and the scheduled renewal charge. Correct any mismatch between the stated promise and the configured result.
